Awards

The 2006 IUPAP Magnetism Prize and Neel Medal, for outstanding contributions to the science of magnetism.

John Slonczewski, IBM Research Cenrer, New York

for fundamental theories concerning domain wall dynamics, exchange and electron transport in magnetic thin-films and multilayers, advancing ideas for storage, memory and oscillators. His predictions include bilinear and biquadratic exchange coupling, magnetoresistance and spin transfer torque, leading to magnetic switching and to the generation of spin waves and microwaves.

The 2006 IUPAP Young Scientist Medal in the field of magnetism, (1) for experimental work

Siddharth Shanker Saxena, Cambridge University

for his pioneering discovery that the boundary of ferromagnetism in metals hosts a low-temperature superconducting phase, as exemplified by UGe2, where ferromagnetism and superconductivity coexist over a range of pressures, and for other stimulating contributions at the interface of magnetism and superconductivity.

The 2006 IUPAP Young Scientist Medal , (2)for theoretical/computational work.

Satoshi Okamoto, Columbia University

Satoshi Okamoto; for fundamental theoretical work establishing the properties of orbiton excitations in magnetic materials, and the physical ideas for determining the electronic properties of oxide heterostructure interfaces.

Past Magnetism prize winners :

2006 Kyoto, J.C. Slonczewski

2003 Rome, G. Aeppli, H. Ohno and D.D. Awschalom

2000 Recife, F. Steglich

1997 Cairns, R. J. Birgeneau

1994 Warswaw, A. Fert/P. Grunberg

1991 Edimburg, A.J. Freeman
